Chilli Peppers and the Brown Bonnet
When it comes to putting chilli peppers into your cooking, there are many options.brown bonnet Some are hotter than others, but one of the most popular is the Brown bonnet. This variant of the Capsicum Chinense has a distinct look, and a distinctive flavour. It is rated around 100,000-350,000 on the Scoville scale, making it pretty darned hot. This spicy plant produces abundantly, with pods maturing from a vibrant green to a deep brown colour. The symphony of flavours, along with its surprisingly soft flesh, make the Brown bonnet an excellent choice for those who want to elevate their culinary repertoire.
While bonnets aren't as common as straw hats, they are still worn in the same circumstances as hats—mostly outdoors for protection from weather.brown bonnet They tend to be warmer than hats, and they can have playful strings attached for holding the hat in place or keeping it off your face (see A Society of Patriotic Ladies, at Edenton in North Carolina and Catchpenny #140). In addition, the shape of a bonnet is more effective at blocking sound than a hat—depending on how far it is down over your ears, it may dampen echoes or change your perception of where sounds are coming from, or even eliminate them from some directions entirely.
In art, we see many different designs of bonnets. Black is by far the most common, followed by white, then a few blue bonnets and very few green and brown ones. The earliest bonnet image we have, probably a woodcut from the 1730s, shows a very narrow brim with a trim of ribbon or fabric in medium tone along or on top of the front of the brim. The brim-caul join is a large bow in front, and the caul itself falls into complex folds (see the detail from Zoffany's The Watercress Girl).
This very tall black silk bonnet fits the high hair style of the 1780s. The brim has a small bow of self-fabric at the center front, and the trim between brim and caul is of the same light-colored fabric as the bow. The caul has a wide, round collapsed front topped by a row of complex pleats in the same fabric as the bow.
The bonnet in this print is pictured with a cloak, which might be a symbol of mourning. The ties are shown in the process of being untied, a feature of many early bonnets. Bonnets also often had ties tucked in the brim until needed, particularly in cold or windy weather.
